Sharpening / Honing Tools

Instructions for Sharpening

Please note: For safety reasons, we are not permitted to deliver our cutting and chopping tools fully sharpened.

Preparing the whetstone - To sharpen / hone, moisten the whetstone for efficient sharpening. To do this, soak the whetstone completely submerged in water for 10-15 minutes.

Preparing the tool - The tool to be sharpened should be clean and free of any dirt residue.

Sharpening process - Option 1: Place the whetstone on a stable, non-slip surface and hold the tool so that the edge to be sharpened lies flat on the whetstone. Option 2: Hold the tool firmly in your hand and hold the whetstone flat against the tool. The angle between the tool and the whetstone varies depending on the tool and personal preference. An angle of about 20 degrees is a good starting point for most tools.

Sharpening - Draw the tool evenly across the whetstone, or draw the whetstone evenly across the tool, applying light pressure. Ensure that you work the entire edge evenly. Perform the movement on both sides of the edge.

Checking progress - Regularly check the condition of the edge by carefully running your finger over it. The edge should feel slightly roughened and sharp.

Deburring - After sharpening, deburring may be necessary to remove any burrs or dull edges.

Cleaning - Rinse and dry the whetstone thoroughly before storing it.

With a little practice, you will be able to sharpen your tool effectively with a whetstone. Remember to be patient and develop the right technique to achieve optimal results.

By the way: All of our tools that require regular resharpening come with a free universal sharpening stone included. The coarse, cigar-shaped whetstone is optimally suited for sharpening.
