How do I fill my raised bed properly?

How to fill your raised bed correctly!

  • First, line the bottom of the raised bed with a 15 cm layer of coarse pottery shards or large pebbles to provide natural protection, e.g. against voles. Next, add a layer of wood chips for drainage. For a smaller balcony raised bed or planter, a few branches are also sufficient as the bottom layer.
  • Next, add some (organic) raised bed soil. If the raised bed is exposed to strong sunlight, some mulch can also be added to help retain water.
  • Then add a 10–15 cm layer of green waste/leaves, finely shredded wood and/or wood chips.
  • For particularly good results, add another layer of nutrient-rich compost and/or rotted manure afterwards.
  • Finally, fill the rest with fresh topsoil and finish with flower soil, herb soil or vegetable soil, depending on what you are planting.

Note:
After some time, the filling will sink by a few centimeters. Simply top it up again with soil and, optionally, some mulch.

But why a raised bed in the first place?

  • Stand up straight while working. No back pain from constant bending over.
  • Optimal nutrient conditions = better yields. Layering organic materials creates optimal nutrient conditions.
  • Better yields thanks to the decomposition heat generated. This is created by the layered structure. The layer of organic materials, which can be up to 80 cm thick, generates heat. This allows for an earlier growing season and a longer harvest period.
  • It produces valuable compost that can be reused in the garden later.
  • A high-quality raised bed is robust, weather-resistant and stable. This means it requires almost no maintenance.
