Whether you buy a scythe sickle or a moon sickle, a dull blade causes large, ragged wounds on plants that heal poorly. A sharp tool requires less effort and ensures a clean cut for healthy plants. With the right instructions, you will learn how to properly hammer-thin the blades of our tools and how they can be resharpened with minimal effort.

1. Hammer-thinning
Hammer-thinning (also known as thinning or tapping) involves hammering the edge of a sickle or scythe to make it thinner and sharper. The resulting edge is known as a thinned edge or, regionally, a thinned blade. Our sickles are only thinned to a certain extent for transport to prevent breakage. Hammer-thinning is used to permanently maintain, improve, or recreate a thin and therefore sharp edge on the scythe blade. At the same time, hammer-thinning can work out any nicks in the blade that easily occur during mowing when they come into contact with foreign objects such as stones in the cut grass. Cold-working the blade during hammer-thinning increases the hardness of the edge. This is why the edges of thinned scythe blades or sickles have a significantly longer service life. Therefore, before first use, you should follow these tips:
2. Sharpening
For sharpening, a suitable whetstone should be moistened for efficient sharpening. The final sharpening of the scythe blade with a moist, evenly guided whetstone has two important functions - It gives the already sharpened or thinned scythe blade its final finish and easily straightens an edge that has slightly bent due to the resistance of the grass during mowing. By the way: All our tools that need to be resharpened regularly come with a free universal sharpening stone. The coarse, cigar-shaped whetstone is ideal for sharpening - especially our sickles.
