During processing, hand-picked horse tail hairs are braided into thin locks and then gently steamed. This completely removes the outermost protein layer of the hair, meaning horsehair toppers cannot trigger a horsehair allergy. Steaming also gives the hair its fine crimp and excellent, elastic resilience, which is not lost even with frequent use.
