When ‘peening’ on a flat anvil (flat face), the scythe blade is hammered out with the peening hammer, from the heel to the tip and back again. This helps draw out (thin) and harden the cutting edge. At the same time, it sharpens the blade and significantly increases its service life. Service life is the amount of time you can work without interruption before signs of wear appear. This type of reshaping can also draw out nicks up to about 5 millimeters deep in the cutting edge.
