SCYTHE

The high-quality specialty-steel blade for hay, perennials or silage is hand-forged in up to 20 steps at one of the last scythe forges in Central Europe, in the Kremstal region of Austria, and peened ready for mowing. The blade has a slight upward curve toward the tip to allow it to glide smoothly with a swinging motion and prevent it from getting caught in the soil. The scythe snath is made from select ash and expertly crafted by hand. The ash snath is curved and has a pointed end. The screw-on wooden grips can be adjusted along the snath to suit the user’s arm length, and the blade is secured with the scythe ring. The blade cuts as it moves from right to left, making it suitable for right-handed users. The ergonomically shaped ashwood snath, with its two adjustable wooden grips, is used to guide the scythe.

Mowing technique
Stand facing the mowing path with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Using your torso and arms, guide the scythe blade in a sweeping arc close to the ground, moving it briskly with a rotating motion and without excessive force. Chopping or pulling motions are often signs that the scythe is not sharp enough.

Sharpness
The scythe blade must be maintained regularly. This means sharpening it at frequent intervals with a damp whetstone (a water-filled stone holder), as well as hardening the cutting edge by peening. On a flat anvil, use the peening hammer to hammer out the scythe blade from heel to tip and back again. This draws out (thins) and hardens the cutting edge. It also sharpens the blade and significantly extends its working life. Working life is the period during which you can work without interruption before signs of wear appear. This method of deformation can also remove nicks up to about 5 millimeters deep in the cutting edge.

Adjusting the scythe
Correctly adjusting and mounting the blade on the snath and setting it to suit the mower’s height is very important. The angle between the blade’s longitudinal axis and the snath, along with the correct cutting height (5 to 10 mm clearance from the ground), ensures perfect mowing.

PEENING HAMMER

The peening hammer is a handy tool specifically for hammering out, hardening and sharpening scythe and sickle blades. The scythe hammer is made of steel and has domed faces for precise, targeted work. The hammer head is securely mounted on an ash handle. When peening on a flat anvil (flat face), use the peening hammer to hammer out the scythe blade from heel to tip and back again. This draws out (thins) and hardens the cutting edge. It also sharpens the blade and significantly extends its working life. Working life is the period during which you can work without interruption before signs of wear appear. This method of deformation can also remove nicks up to about 5 millimeters deep in the cutting edge. The peening hammer is a reliable tool for many years.

PEENING ANVIL

The peening anvil is cast entirely from especially hard cast steel. The spike on the underside lets you use the anvil directly in the field while working with a scythe or sickle. The peening anvil is a reliable tool for many years.
