SCYTHE

The high-quality special-steel scythe blade for grass, weeds, perennials or silage is hand-forged in up to 20 steps at one of the last scythe forges in Central Europe, in the Kremstal region of Austria, and peened ready for mowing.
The scythe blade has a slight upward curve towards the tip, allowing it to glide smoothly with a swinging motion and preventing it from getting caught in the ground.

The metal-tube garden scythe snath is galvanized, curved and pointed. The front wooden handle is adjustable on the snath, and the scythe blade is secured with the scythe ring. The blade cuts as it moves from right to left, so it is designed for right-handed users. The ergonomically shaped metal scythe snath with its two adjustable wooden handles is used to guide the scythe.

Mowing technique
Stand facing the mowing path, with your feet set about shoulder-width apart. Using your torso and arms, swing the scythe blade in a smooth, sweeping arc close to the ground, with a rotating motion and without excessive force. Chopping or pulling motions are often a sign that the scythe is not sharp enough.

Sharpness
The scythe blade must be maintained regularly. This means honing it at short intervals with a damp sharpening stone (carried in a water-filled scythe stone holder), as well as hardening the cutting edge by peening it. On a flat anvil, use a peening hammer to hammer out the scythe blade, working from the heel to the tip and back again. This draws out (thins) and hardens the cutting edge. It also sharpens the blade and significantly increases its edge life. Edge life is the time you can work without interruption before signs of wear appear. This method of reshaping can also remove nicks up to about 5 millimetres deep in the cutting edge.

Adjusting the scythe
Correctly adjusting and mounting the blade on the snath to suit the height of the person mowing is very important. The angle between the blade’s longitudinal axis and the snath, as well as setting the correct cutting height (5 to 10 mm above the ground), ensure perfect mowing.

SCYTHE STONE HOLDER

Our copper scythe stone holder is a quiver-like container for a sharpening stone, known by many names, such as Schlocker, Schlucker or Schiaker. When sharpening tool edges, it is important to generate as little frictional heat as possible. Dry grinding would harden the steel undesirably, making it brittle. To prevent this, fill the holder with water, carry the sharpening stone in it and keep the stone moist at all times. The practical belt attachment lets you carry the holder and sharpening stone close at hand.
Tip: Using copper tools releases tiny amounts of copper into the soil, adding trace elements. Small amounts of copper play an important role in the soil.

SHARPENING STONES

High-quality ceramic sharpening stones for gardening, hobbies and DIY. Reliable tools are essential for effective work in the garden and around the home. The coarse, dark grey stone is used to smooth out uneven areas and coarsely sharpen blades and cutting edges. The fine, light grey stone is used to hone and finish tools, providing a fine edge.

Use

Our sharpening stone is suitable for grinding and sharpening standard tools such as hoes, shovels, spades, sickles, scythes, pruning shears, garden shears and axes. The stones can be used dry or wet, although wet use produces significantly better results.
