The high-quality specialty steel blade for hay, tall vegetation or silage is hand-forged in up to 20 steps at one of the last scythe forges in Central Europe, in the Kremstal region of Austria, and peened ready for mowing. The blade curves slightly upward toward the tip, allowing it to glide cleanly with a swinging motion and preventing it from catching in the soil. The snath is made from selected ash and expertly crafted. The ash snath is curved and has a pointed end. The screw-on wooden grips can be adjusted along the snath to suit the user's arm length; the blade is secured with a scythe ring. The blade cuts as it moves from right to left and is therefore designed for right-handed users. The ergonomically shaped ash wood snath, with its two adjustable wooden grips, is used to guide the scythe.

Mowing technique
Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart, facing the path you intend to mow. Using your torso and arms, guide the blade in a smooth, swinging arc close to the ground, with a twisting motion and without excessive force. Chopping or tearing motions are often signs that the scythe is not sharp enough.
Sharpness
The scythe blade must be maintained regularly. This means touching it up at short intervals with a damp whetstone (carried in a water-filled scythe stone holder), as well as hardening the cutting edge by peening it. On a flat anvil, use a peening hammer to work the blade from heel to tip and back. This stretches (thins) the metal and hardens the cutting edge. It also sharpens the blade and significantly increases its service life. Service life here means how long you can work without interruption before signs of wear appear. This method of reshaping can also remove nicks up to about 5 millimeters deep from the cutting edge.
Adjusting the scythe
Correctly adjusting and mounting the blade on the snath and to suit the user's height is very important. The angle between the blade's longitudinal axis and the snath, along with the correct cutting height (5 to 10 mm above the ground), enables perfect mowing.
SCYTHE STONE HOLDER
Our copper scythe stone holder is a quiver-like container for a whetstone, known by many names, such as Schlocker, Schlucker or Schiaker. When sharpening the cutting edges of tools, it is important to generate as little frictional heat as possible. Dry grinding would harden the steel undesirably, making it brittle. To avoid this, fill the holder with water, carry the whetstone in it and keep the stone damp at all times. The practical belt loop lets you carry the holder and whetstone within easy reach.
Tip: Using copper tools releases trace amounts of copper into the soil, thereby adding a trace element. This small amount of copper plays an important role in the soil.

High-quality ceramic whetstones for gardening, hobbies and DIY. Reliable tools are essential for effective work in the garden and around the home. The coarse, dark gray stone is used to treat uneven areas and for coarse grinding of blades and cutting edges. The fine, light gray stone is used to touch up and hone tools and provides a fine finish.
Use
Our TYROLIT life whetstone is suitable for grinding and sharpening standard tools such as hoes, shovels, spades, sickles, scythes, pruning and garden shears, and axes. The stones can be used dry or wet, although wet use produces a significantly better result.
